Treating cystic acne (and other forms of acne) can be very effective when choices are based on good understanding of the known causes of acne, taking into consideration medical background and grade of severity before treating. Cystic acne generally manifests with over production of fatty acids called sebum, which blocks the pores of small sebaceous glands just below the surface

Treating cystic acne may require drainage of small, localized infections or abscesses that have developed in these areas. The over production of oil in combination with the accumulation of dead skin cells blocking the pores, gives the treating of cystic acne more focus and aim. Acne is made worse by:

- Picking and squeezing the spots

- Stress (indirectly via hormonal changes)

- Hormonal changes in a normal menstrual cycle

- Some contraceptive pills (although others may help in treating cystic acne)

- Certain medicines such as steroids and steroid creams

The basic standard and first line for treating cystic acne is Benzoyl Peroxide, which helps to shed dead skin cells and open pores. Start with a lower concentration or fewer applications and slowly increase the usage over a period of weeks. This may be sufficient to clear up white and black heads, but not always in treating cystic acne. Treating cystic acne is likely to require the next step, i.e. reducing sebum or oil production, of which the gold standard has been Isotretition (Roacutane or Accutane). It works by shutting down the oil production before it reaches the skin. Unfortunately, the side effects of this preparation can be severe, including severe foetal abnormalities if taken during pregnancy, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, neurological and psychiatric as well as blood and liver disorders, requiring regular blood tests.

A new, much safer and more natural preparation that works in the same way as Accutane in treating cystic acne has become available. Vitamin B5 or d-Calcium Pantothenate is a natural chemical. It requires higher than normal concentrations of Vitamin B5, but reduces sebum production, is very safe in even high concentrations and a very exiting  prospect for treating cystic acne.
