Signs symptoms of endometriosis are the result of endometrial tissue (the tissue that is shed from the lining of the uterus during menstruation) found in other parts of the pelvis. The signs and symptoms of endometriosis is caused when this abnormal tissue bleeds during the menstrual cycle or has formed scars and areas of inflammation, which result in:

- Painful and or heavy periods

- Painful sex

- Infertility (30 - 40% of women with signs and symptoms of endometriosis may have problems falling pregnant)

- Fatigue

- Problems with bowel movements including bleeding

- Painful urination

 Signs symptoms of endometriosis may manifest at any time from the onset of menstruation until the time of the menopause (the last period) when the signs symptoms of endometriosis usually ceases. The diagnosis can be confirmed on laparoscopy (key hole surgery), or during any abdominal surgery, as the signs and symptoms of endometriosis may be confused with many other conditions. Scans, blood tests and internal examinations are not conclusive ways of diagnosing this condition.  

 There is no cure for signs and symptoms of endometriosis although pregnancy and breast-feeding may allow for long periods of temporary relief. Hormonal treatments aim at stopping ovulation and menstruation and may be an appropriate treatment for some women with signs symptoms of endometriosis. Surgical removal of endometrial growths through laparoscopy, or more radical surgery as a last resort, where the uterus, ovaries as well as any endometrial growths are removed through laparotomy (open abdominal surgery).

The natural treatment of signs and symptoms of endometriosis includes a diet avoiding xenoestrogen exposure as much as possible (non-organic dairy, beef, chicken etc where growth hormone is added to the feed). Increase nutrient-rich foods such as vegetables, fish and fiber, vitamin and mineral supplements and limiting alcohol intake. Emotional factors have been recognized as an important factor aggravating the signs symptoms of endometriosis.
