Adrenal fatigue as a medical diagnosis has as yet not been accepted by the mainstream medical profession. A condition has however been recognised where abnormal cortisol levels develop following repeated or chronic exposure to stressful situations. The adrenals are two walnut sized glands located on top of the kidneys that produce a number of hormones, including steroids (cortisol), DHEA, aldosterone, estrogen and testosterone. In addition to adrenaline and nor-adrenaline which are responsible for the “flight or fight” response, that unmistakeable short term burst of energy to overcome whatever danger is present. Adrenal fatigue is the result of chronic over stimulation of hormone production. Every challenge to mind and body creates a demand on the glands. This demand becomes excessive under chronically stressful conditions eventually resulting in reduced function or adrenal fatigue.

Symptoms associated with adrenal fatigue are:

- Lethargy, depression and loss of sex drive.

- Poor response to stress

- Aching body and joints, acne and hair loss

- Recurrent or ongoing infections

- Low blood sugar with headaches and brain fog

- Low blood pressure and dizziness

Abnormally high cortisol levels in the early stages of adrenal fatigue, destroy muscle and bone and weakens the natural immunity. As adrenal fatigue progresses, every organ in your body become affected, resulting in conditions such as arthritis and premature menopause. Many other conditions may be connected to adrenal fatigue, including fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Tests for adrenal fatigue are relatively straight forward and not very expensive and involve blood tests or saliva tests at home at specific times of the day, as cortisol levels are naturally expected to rise in the mornings and fall later in the day.

The treatment of adrenal fatigue should commence with the management of hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar). Decreased intake of fast releasing sugars (fructose, sucrose and dextrose) and caffeine, and increase intake of complex carbohydrates (foods with low GI or glycaemic index) such as grains and nuts. Certain herbs and nutrients treat adrenal fatigue by correcting the imbalance in hormones, such as Panax Ginseng and Relora (a combination of plant extracts which have been chosen for their stress relieve, hormone balancing and other beneficial effects on adrenal fatigue).

Hormone replacement treatment consists of DHEA and Hydrocortisone in tablet form, which may be necessary and effective for more extreme cases of adrenal fatigue.
